The Universe of Connections
BioSemiotics: The Interconnected Matrix of Informational Exchange.
The idea that plant molecules serve as chemical messengers between multiple levels of being is very interesting.
We tend in Western culture to think only between the body and brain complex-severing off the myriad relationships between body and environment however far that extends to the universe in whole, -which could make for interesting experiments.
This idea bursts forth the very apparent but largely unexplored and untested field of relational dynamics of communication between various organisms called biosemiotics.
It is true that traditional medicine application forms like steaming and bathing with plant medicines have the aim to immerse the person in the field of information that the whole plant form contains within all its chemistry, (not one isolated chemical as is popular in western medicine) Thus, what appears primitive as traditional medicine methods may be highly rational and effective tool to connect with the larger informational networks around us.
Western dualistic and reductionism theory has created a very linear and one to one relationship view between lock and key, drug and physical response etc, but what if that is only the simplest reduction when in fact what is really going on are webs of chemistry and information interacting on multiple levels of being, and in all beings in what could be understood to be an organic matrix or energetic mycelium operating beyond our conscious awareness, that given the right conditions of consciousness attunement can lead us to awareness of this matrix of information intelligence and awareness all around us that speaks to us ever so subtly moment to moment.
All biosemiotics is then, is a fancy word to describe the longstanding magico physico relational sets tribal societies talk about between plants, medicines, animals, elements and the spirits-i.e., the universe of informational relationships that their myths and cosmo-vision and worldviews have been based on for millennia.
This reminds me of the first time I took Ayahuasca, where I saw mandalas of information coming to me through the night air. My account was
“I remember thinking in my normal frame of mind that it was “intergalactic code” or the chemicals in the plants served as a way for people to connect with civilisations of long ago not from our physical realm but which live on in another dimension, and these plants acted like antenna for us to pick up the signals/transmission from that spiritual realm.”
Perhaps this is what I was experiencing- not to be decoded but that was literally connecting to the matrix of universal biosemiotics-or networks of information beyond the boundaries of the human body but that extend out into the Universe.
Psychedelics, systems theory, the matrix movie etc, all points more and more not to an effect of a substance but the nature of informational systems that is like a Universal mycelia network.
Thank you for inspiring this piece Glenn Shepard through your work.
I would like to propose experiments where chemicals from various plant subjects 😀 are taken internally by human subjects who then have the plants (from which the chemicals were taken) in their vicinity, with scientific measuring equipment to test whether the plants respond in some way to mental and perhaps verbal communication from the human subjects (chemical messenger molecule aspects of the plant subjects which are at the same time in the human subjects).
